Sustainable Monday – Sustainable Art and Upcycling at The Hague University of Applied Sciences

On Monday 13 October, The Hague University of Applied Sciences celebrated Sustainable Monday — an inspiring day organised by the Green Office, The Lighthouse, and Artlovers.
This year’s theme was Upcycle Behaviour – how can small, clever choices make your life both more sustainable and more creative?

Art Project: The Blue City Made from Recycled Plastic
At the invitation of Artlovers, I worked together with students to build an artwork made from blue plastic waste. In the week leading up to the event, I collected plastic from the Return Club and HMS at the Binckhorst, supplemented with materials from my own studio.
What made this project truly special was that everyone could join in. I invited passing students and staff to help build the small blue city themselves. In this way, they literally contributed to a growing, sustainable artwork.

The Atrium of the university was filled that day with sustainable initiatives and creative activities, all organised by the Green Office. Visitors could not only build and explore, but also sample sustainable dishes, such as the delicious ‘waste-not’ tomato soup.
Artist Nishiko was also present, showcasing her work that likewise emphasises the value of reuse and mindful material use.

Working Together Towards a More Sustainable Future
The highlight of the day? A student who said, “Thank you for having so much fun with us!”
That compliment summed up the day perfectly. It wasn’t only about sustainability and upcycling, but also about creating together, having conversations, and not least, playing again for a moment.
Sustainable Monday showed that sustainability begins with small steps, creativity, and collaboration.
